The Forget Me Not Fund is an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
The Forget Me Not Fund was established to help Yellowstone County families experiencing financial hardship afford a dignified direct cremation and bring their loved one home.
We believe every family deserves the opportunity to receive their loved one's cremated remains, regardless of financial circumstances.
Yellowstone County's indigent assistance program provides an important public service for individuals who have no available financial resources for final disposition. The Forget Me Not Fund is not intended to replace that program.
The Forget Me Not Fund was created to serve families who are experiencing financial hardship but wish to receive their loved one's cremated remains.
When a family utilizes the county's indigent assistance program, the final disposition is handled through that program, and the cremated remains are not returned to the family. For many families, this means losing the opportunity to bring their loved one home.
The Forget Me Not Fund was established to provide an alternative for eligible Yellowstone County families. By assisting with the cost of a dignified direct cremation, our goal is to help families receive their loved one's cremated remains while preserving their dignity and honoring their wishes.
We believe no family should have to choose between financial hardship and the opportunity to bring their loved one home.
The Forget Me Not Fund provides gap funding for families experiencing financial hardship. Assistance is paid directly to the funeral home or crematory and is limited to the Fund's approved direct cremation package.
There is no family application.
The licensed funeral director determines when a family is experiencing financial hardship and may benefit from assistance through The Forget Me Not Fund.
Families are asked to contribute what they comfortably can. The Fund assists with the remaining balance, up to the program maximum, subject to available funding and program guidelines.
The Forget Me Not Fund provides assistance for:
Direct cremation
One dignified urn selected from the Fund's approved program options
Up to ten certified death certificates
The Forget Me Not Fund exists to help families who cannot afford a dignified direct cremation. It is not intended to subsidize traditional funeral arrangements or make optional funeral purchases more affordable.
Our mission is to ensure that families facing genuine financial hardship can bring their loved one home with dignity.
To preserve the integrity of the Fund and ensure charitable donations help as many families as possible, participating funeral homes and crematories are asked to:
Treat every assisted family with dignity, compassion, and respect.
Use professional discretion when identifying families experiencing genuine financial hardship.
Offer the Fund's standardized assistance package.
Keep assisted cases service-focused, not sales-focused.
Refrain from upselling additional merchandise or services as part of an assisted case.
Submit the remaining eligible balance directly to The Forget Me Not Fund for payment.
The Forget Me Not Fund does not provide assistance for:
Traditional funeral or memorial services
Visitations or viewings
Flowers
Upgraded urns or keepsakes
Jewelry
Memorial folders or prayer cards
Tribute videos
Catering or receptions
Limousines
Any merchandise or services outside the Fund's approved assistance package
By working together, funeral homes, crematories, and The Forget Me Not Fund can ensure that families experiencing financial hardship are treated with dignity, compassion, and respect while preserving charitable resources for those who need them most.
Together, we can give eligible Yellowstone County families the opportunity to bring their loved one home.
